Regions Near and Far:  TSW review Unit 6:  The West.  TSW become familiar with the important resources of the West, important events in the history of the west, and the capitals, state birds, state flowers and other facts of the West.
TSW then view a video as an introduction to the West.

Regions Near and Far:  TSW be able to understand that the geography of the West includes extreme differences in landforms and climate.  TSW identify the various landforms and climates and associate them by state.  Read pp. 337 – 342 and create a graphic organizer.

Regions Near and Far:  TSW be able to name the natural resources of the West and associate them by state.  Complete map skills on p. 345.  Read pp. 344 – 347 and create a graphic organizer

Daily Geography Review 10:  Picturing the World
Regions Near and Far
TSW identify the importance of the Houston Ship Channel.  TSW compare modern cattle ranching with the cattle drives of the past.  TSW describe the major industries of the Southwest. TSW will be given 5 unfamiliar words that they will encounter in the text.  TSW skim the chapter, find the sentences in which the words appear and they try to guess what the meaning is based on context clues.  TSW then predict what the chapter will be about based on the vocabulary, chapter title, and subheadings.

TSW learn some of the subdivisions of the Dewey Decimal System, Introduction p. 89
Regions Near and Far
TSW answer review questions from Tuesday’s reading.  TSW define heritage and be able to identify various events held in the Southwest that celebrate a particular group’s heritage.  Read pp. 314 – 317
After reading, each student will write a summary of one tradition practiced by people of the SW to celebrate their heritage.

Research Skills for Geography TSW become familiar with the Dewey Decimal System as a way to catalog library books, introduction p. 86
Regions Near and Far TSW learn to scan text to find answers to questions using chapter headings, bolded words, and finger skimming. TSW will also be able to tell why Pueblos built their homes out of Adobe, the techniques they used to grow corn, and identify the ways that Pueblos used corn, pp. 288 - 292

Tuesday
Daily Geography Review 8, Mercator Projection Maps
Regions Near and Far TSW answer questions to review information from Monday’s lesson. TSW then write a short paragraph explaining why the Pueblos were called a ‘self-sufficient” group. TSW break into pairs and skim over Lesson 2 (pp. 293 – 296). For each heading, TSW come up with 1 question and answer. The groups will share with the class.

Research Skills for Geography TSW analyze given topics, decide which category into which they fall, and then identify where to find information of the subjects using the Dewey Decimal System
Regions Near and Far TSW review their questions and answers from Tuesday’s lesson. TSW read Lesson 2 in its entirety. Mrs. Pittard will share pictures of her visit to San Antonio and the Alamo.

Regions Near and Far TSW answer review questions from Lesson 2. TSW apply the same strategy from Tuesday’s lesson of skimming each heading and formulating a question from each and answering each question (in partners). The groups will share their questions/answers with the class.
